How Last Call Began

It seems like such a long time ago when Ricky and I (Diego) decided to change the typical night out for our fellow Miamians, but it has been less than 2 years. I was a huge clubber when I was 21, but I eventually became bored with that scene and started frequenting bars. It was a big change; less noise which made it much easier to socialize, and cheaper drinks which left me feeling much better after seeing my credit card bill. I had phased out of the club scene and entered a completely new world, with a desire to check out different bars every week and eventually sample every IPA I could find. I had moved to Argentina when I was 25, leaving a life behind in Miami. Friends, family, and work all put on hold. Ricky was still in Miami, running our annual Drink Around The World….. his prized baby! When I returned from Argentina, we decided we wanted to bring something similar to what we do every year at Epcot with Drink Around The World, to Miami. After various months of comprehensive planning, we had a much better idea exactly what we wanted to do.

The name ‘Last Call Pub Crawls’ sprung to life after having discarded hundreds of other names. At one point, we were on the verge of naming the company ‘Red Rope’. I even had all the design work and logo ready to go for Red Rope. Luckily we scrapped that name for our now famous ‘Last Call Pub Crawls’, and I am very glad we did. Everything was lining up great. We had most of the technical ground work in place (our domain names, web servers, booking system, and social media). We had our business model practically finalized. Our system was looking great, we just needed partner venues to work with us!

This was back in June 2011. Ricky and I had our portfolio and presentations ready, we had our logo on our new and spiffy polo shirts, and we had 6 interviews with venues in South Beach lined up. I remember being very nervous. It was a bit surreal, actually starting our own venture. Luckily I had my best friend as a business partner. I am sure he was shitting bricks just as much as I was. A few weeks later, we had agreed on terms with all our participating venues, and promised them a big group of people at their bar for Saturday August 20th. Once that was all set up, we opened up sales on our website.

I admit, the first of our www.comecrawl.com website was not modern looking, at least compared to our current iteration. It looked like a website from 2002! Still, I had put in many hours into it and it worked as intended. During this time, Ricky was making sure our negotiations with the venues stayed on track. Our first event started at Tequila Chicas on Ocean Drive. We arrived about an hour early to make sure everything went smooth. Shortly after, we had our check-in table, our wristbands all cut up and ready to be given out and a refreshing, much needed moral support from friends. In fact, we had about 70 people at that first event, of which about 45 were good friends of ours and their immediate social circles.

Things went smoothly for the most part, and the hiccups we did encountered were only the start of many we would have to deal with and resolve in this new industry. Mind you, I graduated with an engineering degree and Ricky was a customs broker for 10 year…..what did we know about bars? We tried to leave nothing to chance and have a plan for everything that could go wrong. Fortunately for us, the night cruised on and people were having fun (and getting really drunk on the cheap). When the event concluded, we wrapped everything up and went home, very anxious for the feedback we would receive over the next few days. Would it be positive? Did they like the event? Did they save a lot of money? Did they meet new people and check out new venues they did not know existed?

The feedback was stellar! We received emails congratulating us on the event. It seemed like everyone had a blast and their bill at the end of the night was reduced in half. Our Facebook ‘like’ count started going up and the demand for a new crawl sprouted. At this point we knew we had something great going for us…..a service to our fellow drinker! The next event was soon planned……and many more followed.
